Correlation - Leak Pinpointing

Water Distribution Utilities have historically conducted tradition leak detection surveys during the summer months, when weather conditions permit relatively easy location and pinpointing of leaks. Also, hydrants, main line valves and curb boxes are easier to locate and visually inspect due to lack of frost and snow cover. Leak repairs can be scheduled during this time. During the winter season locating and pinpointing a water main break under emergency conditions can become a very difficult and costly procedure.   Hetek Solutions Inc. has, for many years, been at the forefront of Water Leakage Control Surveys, and has been called upon by many large and small municipalities to provide Emergency Leak Pinpointing Services. Our highly trained staff can respond to an emergency situation on short notice and, using only high technology equipment, can accurately locate and pinpoint water main breaks.

A search survey is first conducted by listening on hydrants and, where possible, any accessible (unfrozen) mainline valves, or curb boxes using a direct contact probe from electro-acoustical listening devices. Once the leak sound is located, the transmitters from a Water Leak Correlator system are set up in different configurations on hydrant and mainline valves. Correlations are conducted at each setups and the leak position is confirmed and located. Using a ground microphone attachment to an electro-acoustic instrument re-confirms the location of the leak.
